***UPDATE!!! Khalid recently had a breed change (Spanish Mustang w/ Sun Fading) and no longer uses this Breed Doc. Figuring out his coloring was what led to his weird "possible" breed mix; and apparently can be too much for some judges (hence the reason why his placings are all over the place....and I personally think he placed high mostly for his unique coloring along with his realistic photo entry (main photo)). He is certainly one of those odd "Breyer Colors"!! :D
This page is specifically created as an easy access for judges (and for me!) to see the documentation for my herd member, Khalid, a Seal Brown Double Pearl Dun Spanish Grade (1/2 Andalusian, 1/4 Lusitano, 1/4 Dongola) stallion - the Breyer 2019 Flagship Special Run.
Khalid is one of those "Breyer Colors" who don't necessarily follow along the rules of the breed mold. He is labeled as a Barb, but Barbs don't come in any of these colors. So, of course, he would result in a crossbreed to allow a color combo like this. Two photo references: 1st photo (above) depicts the Sudan horse, the Dongola. This light breed is the descendant of the Arabian, Barb, and Iberian horses. They come in all self colors (Bay, Black, & Chestnut) and the Sabino gene (in which, genetically, Khalid is the second generation to inherit).
The 2nd photo was scanned from the book "Horse Colored Explored" by Vera Kurskaya. It depicts a Lusitano/Andalusian cross that is not only Seal Brown base, but is also a Double Pearl (a Cream mutation that is present in Andalusians as well in other breeds...but not in Lusitanos). Lastly, since Polygenics, the genetics of variety (shade in this case), are always at play when determining the color of an organism. In this case, one can simply assume that it is possible for any color plus the Dun gene vary from dark to light; an obviously Zebra Dun or just a plain Bay horse coloring with the Dun gene with all the primitive markings (dorsal stripe & leg barring) - it all depends on Polygenics. So, Khalid's Dun gene shows that his body did not lighten or darken, but instead looks like a Seal Brown Double Pearl with Dun markings.
The Punnett square above depicts a visual explanation of the possibility of Khalid's coloring and pattern (red circle) according to his parents' possible colors. There is a key on the right hand side of the Punnett square for the gene abbreviations.
